BUSINESS NEWS
The market ended the previous session mixed to weaker amid cautious trade following a strong midweek rally and ahead of the Fed Chairman's speech.  However, the indices opened aggressively higher amid a pre-market report that President Bush would be outlining a plan designed to help subprime borrowers avoid foreclosure.  Favorable but generally in line data elicited no reaction.  Little follow through was noted following the opening run and the Fed Chair's comments triggered no interest given the already sizeable morning sprint.  Ultimately, the pre-market release of the President's outline priced in much of the impact either speech might have had.  Volume was limited ahead of the holiday but the market did see a minor mid and late day short covering rallies before a round of last minute profit taking.  On the week it was a roller coaster ride with the Nasdaq 100/Comp the only indices to end higher.  However, weekly hammers were formed (closed near open and well off the low for the week) which argues that the bulls were able to take control after a sizeable wave of selling. Friday's gains were broad based with Steel +3.1%, Rail +2.8%, Gold/Silver +2.8%, Home Construction +2.6%, Oil Service +2.4%, Retail +2.4%, Broker +2.2% and Transports pacing the way.
